Bloom see’s these letters in the printing shop in 7 Aeolus, as set by the typesetter. The literal printing in the book, pushes the boundary of what a novel can be. Backwards, it spells Patrick Dignam, for whom the funeral is in 6 Hades. Forwards, however, it reads somewhat like “mangled,” perhaps a pun on the work. At the same time, technically it should be mirrored, not just reverse order, showing the limitations of Joyce’s creativity in print.
