A British student of Irish folklore who lives with Stephen and Buck Mulligan in the Martello tower at Sandycove when Ulysses opens. The Martello tower episode is based on the brief, real-life time that Joyce spent there with Oliver St. John Gogarty (who became Buck Mulligan) and Samuel Chenevix Trench (who became Haines). Gogarty met Trench while he was a student at Oxford. Trench was a dedicated student of Irish literature and folklore; he was especially interested in resurrecting the Irish language. Haines appears in Telemachus, Wandering Rocks, and Oxen of the Sun.
